IHS has an experienced pool of consultants including Physicians, Occupational Health
Specialists, Public Health Scientists,
Clinical Psychologists and Anthropologists. Some are
working on permanent basis while others are on panel
and work with IHS on project to project basis.
Due to IHS involvement
in many health related areas like Emergency & Home
Care, School Health, Occupational Health & Safety
and diagnostic services; it has diverse resources at its disposal
that can be diverted towards research studies and
consultancies at any level or location in Pakistan.
IHS also specializes in
infrastructure development for hospitals and
diagnostic centers. On
our panel are architects who have designed major
hospitals in USA, Canada, Russia & India.
Viral
Hepatitis National Case Management Guidelines:
IHS has been assigned by the National
Program for Control & Prevention of Hepatitis to
prepare national guidelines for management of cases
of viral hepatitis. It's a great honor for IHS that
it was selected for this important assignment
of critical national importance. After
completion of the guidelines they will be
implemented across Pakistan at all
government and private sector healthcare facilities ranging from small clinics to
large hospitals. Dr. Khalid Iqbal Hussain (MBBS, FCPS -
Medicine, MIPH) is the team leader. Other members of
the team include Dr. Usman Hadi, Dr. Asmatullah
Malik and Dr. Shahid Nadeem besides field staff
in the four provinces, FATA & FANA. Gastroenterologists & Hepatologists from all the
main cities of Pakistan have been included in the
'core group' so that a consensus is built. Prof. Dr.
Javed Butt an eminent Gastroenterologist of Pakistan
is the chief
consultant of IHS for this project. While Prof. Dr. Muhammad Umar, Head of Medicine, Rawalpindi Medical College
is the head of the focal group of Hepatologists from
all over Pakistan.
The final draft of the
guidelines has been approved and now is undergoing
field testing which is the first step in its
implementation across the country. Field testing is
being carried out by Dr. Khlaid Iqbal Hussain and
Dr. Shahid Nadeem.
Viral
Hepatitis: National Guidelines
for Counseling of High Risk Groups:
IHS is also preparing guidelines to be adopted
across the country for counseling and guidance of
high risk groups like drug addicts, prisoners,
medical professionals, sex workers, etc. Theses
guidelines are also being prepared for the National Program for Control &
Prevention of Hepatitis.
Worm Infestation in
Rural School Children:
In 1998 IHS conducted a study on the incidence of Worm
infestation among school going children in the Attock
district. 53% children tested positive for worms on
stool R/E.
School Health
Services in AJK: IHS has
been working on developing a self sustainable model of
school health in Azad Kashmir with the support of Save
the Children (UK) since 1st August 2007. A pilot
project involving two Union Councils in Bagh &
Muzafarabad district is underway. On completion in
March 2008 it will be replicated in other parts of AJK
if found successful. In the process IHS has developed
a very comprehensive manual for capacity building of
teachers through which 114 teachers in the two
districts have been trained by IHS school health
doctors. Over 6000 school children between the age of
5 and 16 are also being screened through a
standardized health examination format.
School Health Data:
Being the largest school health provider of the
country during the last 10 years 0.8 million school children
have remained enrolled with IHS School Health Program. The
data obtained through periodic examinations and sick
reports is analyzed to develop
effective interventions to prevent and correct
diseases at an early stage.
Hepatitis Research:
Hepatitis has remained a focal point of our
activities. We were the first organization in Pakistan
to launch mass Hepatitis B awareness and vaccination programs in
1996. During the process 73,000 B and C screenings
were conducted. Marked variation in its incidence were noted among
various socioeconomic groups and geographical areas.
IHS is also currently
involved in HIV (AIDS) awareness activities in Punjab
and Sindh province with assistance from local private
medical practitioners.
Tuberculosis
Prevention & Control - School Health Club Model:
IHS through funding from GFATM in coordination with
National TB Program and Mercy Corps Pakistan, is initiating
an ACSM intervention for TB, focusing on school children. An elaborate health education
program has been devised that will be implemented in
schools across Pakistan in phases over a period of 5
years.
The rationale behind
this intervention is:
-
Young minds are very
receptive and eager to share the newly learned
knowledge.
-
Teachers can give
added support through persistent health education
or even as silent observers.
-
Generally people
tend to stick with the habits developed in
childhood.
-
Target audience
i.e., the children are available in groups thus
are easily and comprehensively accessible.
-
Follow up is
guaranteed because of institutional involvement.
-
Exposure at this
stage of life will ensure that the future
leadership will be more aware and take health
friendly decisions when they grow up.
The outcomes expected through this intervention are:
-
Well educated & health conscious students
-
Flow of information to parents, family, friends & community
-
Teachers trained in early detection of TB and monitoring DOTS
-
Leaders and decision makers of the future will be trained now to make positive decisions when they enter practical life.
-
Generation of volunteers who will become TB
ambassadors, educators, monitors and advocates and will help in:
-
Improving case detection and treatment adherence,
-
Combating stigma and discrimination,
-
Empowering and respecting the people affected by TB and
-
Mobilizing political commitment and resources for TB control.
Following districts
have been selected for implementation in the first
year as a pilot intervention:
Punjab:
-
Sialkot
-
Gujrat
-
Gujranwala
-
Mandi Bahauddin
-
Khushab
Balochistan:
-
Quetta
Sindh:
-
Tando Muhammad Khan
-
Tando Allahyar Khan
AJK:
-
Muzafarabad
-
Bagh
This is the first time
that such an intervention has been devised in the
world to fight TB. The success of this program can
lead to similar interventions in other developing
countries where TB is rampant. This intervention is
the brain child of Dr. Muhammad Asim Mahmood Khan,
the CEO of IHS.
The program is
designed for 5 years. It will be launched
from September 2007 .

Clinical Trials:
IHS
has been involved with Pharmaceuticals for clinical
trials. We conducted an international trial
sponsored by GSK to assess immune status of school
going children in various socioeconomic groups against
Hepatitis A. Another trial was to assess the efficacy
of Silimarine a drug used for treatment of Hepatitis B
& C.
IHS provides Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliant
clinical trials infrastructure for investigators. IHS
aims to strengthen the link between investigators and
pharmacologists and provide a one-stop, seamless
contact center for pharmaceutical companies interested
in the development and testing of new compounds. We
also conduct training programs for clinical
trial management.
Many senior professionals from the
pharmaceutical
industry are engaged with IHS.
IHS also has agreements with major labs of the country
for laboratory facilities needed in clinical trials.
